Document Summary
Motivation: internal state that arouses directs, and maintains behaviours. What energizes and directs our behaviour: 5 basic questions: choices, getting started, intensity, persistence, thoughts, and feelings. o. Intrinsic: motivation associated with activities that are their own reward. Associated with success in school, creativity is higher, deep learning is better, etc. o. Extrinsic: motivation created by external factors (rewards and punishments). Just by looking at a person, it is pretty impossible to tell if they have intrinsic or extrinsic motivation without knowing their inner thoughts. Locus of causality: the location (internal or external) of the cause of behaviour. Not two ends of a continuum, instead they are two independent possibilities. You can"t be in between internal and external. There is a continuum of being high or low in internal or high or low in external. Behavioural approaches to motivation: rewards, punishments. Humanistic interpretations of motivation: emphasize personal freedom, choice, self- determination, and striving for personal growth.
