Document Summary

In 1960, dean of indiana university went on a solo trip across the atlantic ocean. When asked if he would do it again, he said no: it was too miserable. Life without people had no meaning, needed someone to talk to. At the same time, a psychologist of chicago uni offered (~ today) to students to stay in a room by themselves with no contact. No students stayed for more than 8 days, 1 student left after 20 min. I: rewards lead to positive affect (feelings); punishments lead to negative affect, we"ll like people who reward us and dislike people who punish us. But that"s not all: we"ll like/dislike people even when they don"t cause our pos/neg feelings. They simple have to be present when we experience positive or negative affect (eg. hot rooms; bad news; unpleasant music) Result: less likely to like a stranger in a hot room than in a cool room.
