1960, dean of indiana university person sails a boat alone from east coast of us: 51 days later arrived in ireland, he was very lonely, said would not do it again. It was too lonely, thought i was self sufficient, but i need people, without people, life has no meaning. Pay student a day to sit in a room alone without contact of the outside world at. Columbia university: nobody could last longer than 8 days, one person only lasted 20 minutes. In initial encounters: proximity, familiarity, physical attractiveness. They just need to be present when we experience positive or negative affect. Ex: hot rooms: put in a waiting room that was either hot or comfortable. When asked to rate the other person (stranger) in the room, people said to have liked the stranger less if in the hot room.
