Ho(cid:271)(cid:271)es" state of (cid:374)ature(cid:895: rousseau does not like this vision of liberty, (cid:862)ma(cid:374) is (cid:271)or(cid:374) free a(cid:374)d e(cid:448)ery(cid:449)here he is i(cid:374) (cid:272)hai(cid:374)s(cid:863) The general will: what the sovereign wants, another word for it could be the public interest, or the public good, the general will defines what is good and what is right. In the general will you specifically have to think in terms of the community. If people disagree (cid:449)ith this (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ge, he says (cid:862)he shall (cid:271)e for(cid:272)ed to (cid:271)e free(cid:863) and you will be forced to live under the laws of the community and accept them. If you resist the general will, you are bringing back the possibility of going back to civilized society. Characteristics: small polity, preferably everybody knows each other too large if you need to elect representatives because you are then separated from politics and the sovereign, easier to identify with a small community, contributes to simplicity, equality.
