Two different positions: human beings are born the way they are, set characteristics of human beings, humans beings are socially constructed. We have physical needs and emotional needs: define ourselves. Homer: humans are social creatures: we need other people, to be isolated is to not live a human life. Humans are religious, gods are intervening in people"s minds: women can"t have an equal friendship with powerful people. Only equal friendships (ideal) can be between agathos. Male friendships have priority: women are virtually objects or possessions, women are denied access to the arena where status and honor are. Female inferiority, rooted in physical inferiority based on who can fight. Facing a world of conflict, world of violence and danger honour, and power earned. The preferred life is the life of the male warrior hero. Warrior clan centered by the eikos headed by the agathos.
