Integration of black americans into a mainstream culture sport (jazz musicians rejecting the integration of a unified culture) 1930s big step back in terms of civil rights blacks fired first, lynching, etc. Not unified debate between segregation, unification, violence vs. peace, etc. The negro leagues: baseball wasn"t segregated. As the country becomes more segregated ad jim crowe laws become more prevalent, so does baseball. 1887 black players no longer being hired for professional baseball only allowed to play at the amateur level. 1929 league limped on during the great depression. 1933 comes back, lasting until the 1950s: integration with jackie robinson kills segregated. Leagues: phenomenal athlete, but not the best player out there, played in negro leagues with kansas city monarchs, branch rickey partner choses robinson to help integrate baseball. Brooklyn dodgers started him at first base on april 15, 1947.
