Ideologies describe the present, offer a future oriented vision and an action plan: ideas should be cohesive, many ideologies take all of society as a study, set of ideas tending to describe a few things. Offer a vision of what a better political order would look like. Externally and internally contested: tested by other ideologies, internally contested-> no ideology where everybody is committed. They reflect historical conditions: reflect historical times in the past and in the present. Ideologies and the enlightenment: enlightenment: a cultural and intellectual movement in europe-> emphasised use of reason and rationality in the pursuit of knowledge. Protection of individual: by the state (physical protection) Property rights, rules of law: legal protection: countries legal system will treat all citizens equally. Limited government intervention: classical liberals think that governments don"t have a lot to do. Defined as an absence of interference: classical liberalism: the less i"m left alone the more freedom i have.
