Antoine destutt used to to refer to a science of ideas that could be discovered in the same way that truths are discovered in the natural sciences. More often than not action-oriented: seek to promote a particular social and political order. Less rigorous and sophisticated than proper political philosophy. Tend to combine concepts that political philosophers look at individually. Ex. liberalism and socialism emerged during the industrial revolution. Sphere of inviolability : bubble of non-interference is left alone as much as possible. Opportunity concept of freedom: if you are not being interfered you have the opportunity to be free. Vaporization of free markets: economic activity is made up of transactions that happen every day. Core values: equality of opportunity (action programs, hiring quotas, individual freedoms and rights, safety of individuals and population. Freedom involves capacity to determine and achieve own goals. Exercise concept of freedom (take action in order to achieve goals)
