Document Summary

Diseases of the gi tract - key terms. Absorption - the process of taking up nutrients and other materials from the external environment of the gastrointestinal tract into the internal environment of the body. Adhesion - a fibrous band of scar tissue that binds together normally separate anatomical structures. Appendicitis - acute inflammation of the appendix which may lead to perforation of the appendix wall and subsequent peritonitis: over time, this swelling and infection can cause the appendix to perforate (burst or rupture). If untreated, the infection can then spread and lead to peritonitis, an infection of other tissues in the abdomen. Appendicitis is the most common cause of emergency abdominal surgery in children. Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs. This is consistent with crohn"s disease whereas in ulcerative colitis, the inflammation is only seen in the surface mucosa.
