Nursing 4400A/B Lecture 6: Week 6 Reading Notes
Document Summary
Week 6 reading notes: an overview of diabetic ketoacidosis in. Often associated with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. First appears in childhood or adolescence leading cause of morbidity and death in children with type 1 diabetes. Pathophysiology: initiated via insulin deficiency (hyperglycemia) which lead to glycosuria and osmotic diuresis insulin deficiency is caused by excess production of counter-regulatory hormones (glucagon, adrenaline, cortisol and growth hormone) ** ketones are good to a point (i. e. alternative nrg source for brain and muscles) but too much can lead to acidosis. Vomiting increase hydrochloric acid loss (causes a shift in hydrogen ion concentration in the body to reverse the fall in blood ph). Increased breathing expels co2 which is carried in the blood as carbonic acid. The point of increased breathing and vomiting is to regulate the bloods ph levels but also causes an increase in dehydration.
