Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, characterized by the destruction of insulin-secreting beta cells of the pancreas. Progressive decline in beta-cell mass results in insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. Etiology is largely unknown: genetic predisposition. If a person has a first degree relative with t1d, they have a higher risk for developing diabetes.
