Microbiology and Immunology 3820A Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Natural Killer Cell, Progenitor Cell, Phagocyte
Document Summary
Cells tissue cells, white blood cells called leuckocytes : phagocytes and lymphocytes. Proteins secreted by cells: cytokines, antibodies. Immature dc it"s a phagocyte and its part of innate immunity: mature dc initiates adaptive immunity. Immune system: innate immunity, adaptive immunity, b cell immunity (antibodies, t cell immunity, vaccines stimulate adaptive immunity, passive immunity, not your own, provides immediate and short term mmunity. Its given to you e. g. antibodies such as gamma globulun ** Its temp though so needs to be replaced. Different mechanism are used for extracellular and intracellular pathogens. Small proteins secreted by activated nucleated cells. An actiavtedd cell releases many cytokines at the same time. They are messengers how cells communicate with eachother: they bind to a cytokine receptor that is expressed by cells and this is how they signal or tel the cell how to behave. They activate or suppress most cell behaviours: cell proliferation, growth, maturation, survival.
