Document Summary
Aerobic exercise and executive function: task switching testing. Cheng et al meta analysis suggested positive effects of a single bout of acute aerobic exercise on executive function. Executive function= processing and attending stimuli, updating and monitoring working memory and asserting high level inhibitory control. *3 sections of the pfc= dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, orbital frontal cortex, anterior singulate cortex. Improvement in reaction time in anti-saccade (but not pro-saccade) No differences within exercise intensities (ie. light intensity showed the same effects on anti-saccades compared to high intensity) Used task switching paradigm to measure response inhibition. Switch trials have longer reaction times than non-switching trials. However, in anti saccade task switching (pro to anti) and and task repetition (same pro or anti as previous) trials do not differ: unidirectional pro saccade switch cost. Unidirectional switch cost: reaction time of pro saccade increases when going from an anti to pro saccade.
