Ingested and produced by the liver: used as an energy substrate for muscle, brain and excess glucose is deposited as fat. Insulin: an anabolic hormone, secreted by the islet cells of the pancreas, production stimulated by high glucose levels, amino acids and g1 hormones. 10-15% of diabetes in western world: lack of endogenous insulin pancreatic beta cell insufficiency, autoimmune disorder, common in childhood and adolescence, prone to ketoacidosis, requires insulin for rx. 80% are obese, often + fhx: diminished insulin secretion, reduced insulin sensitivity and increased liver production of glucose, rx: diet, weight loss, meds oral hypoglycemic. Type 2 dm ** know this chart/ be able to write it out. Symptoms of diabetes: frequent urination, sudden weight loss, wounds that won"t heal, always hungry, sexual problems, blurry vision, vaginal infections, numb or tingling hands or feet, always thirsty/dry mouth. 2 hr ogtt 75g load > 11. 1 mmol/l.
