Kinesiology 3222A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Levator Palpebrae Superioris Muscle, Lacrimal Apparatus, Meibomian Gland
Document Summary
Accessory eye structures: eyelids, shade eyes during sleep, protect from light or objects, lubricate eyes, eyelashes, protect eyes from objects, eyebrows, protect eyes from sun. Lacrimal apparatus: tear production, lubrication of eye, wash away debris, extrinsic eye muscles, eye movement. Eyelids: palpebrae (upper and lower, upper is more mobile. Levator palpebrae superioris muscle: tarsal plates, dense connective tissue under each eyelid, tarsal glands - secrete fluid to prevent adhering, conjunctiva - mucous membrane, palpebral - under eyelids, bulbar - surface of eyeball. Sebaceous ciliary glands: lubrication (sebum) into the hair follicles, clinical significance, stye, bacterial infection or blockage of gland, tender and swollen. Lacrimal glands: produce tears (lacrimation, drain into lacrimal canal and then into nasolacrimal duct, controlled by psns. Extrinsic eye muscles: muscles that move the eyeball, 4 rectus (straight) Insert onto the sclera: superior, inferior, medial, and lateral, 2 oblique, superior and inferior. Accessory eye muscle: orbicularis oculi, closes eye tightly.
