Kinesiology 2230A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Catecholamine, Valsalva Maneuver, Cardiac Arrest
Document Summary
Hyper = increase; trophy= in muscle mass; myo = heart tissue; pathy = disease state. Most common cause of sudden death in the young. Problem: ventricular chamber is small, affects sv, how much blood is ejected per beat. Causes of sudden cardiac death in competitive athletes. Incidence of sudden death of 2-4% per year in adults. Map = taking diastolic pressure (while heart is filling) and we add difference between sys and diastolic pressure. 0. 33 = 1/3- contraction period is much shorter than filling period. Rate pressure product (rpp) = estimate of cardiac work. Quantifying the work that the heart performs. Valsalva maneuver- forced expiration with a closed glottis. Ex. in the weight room, happens naturally, trying to lift something heavy. Initially bp will be high, then we see systolic and diastolic bps decrease. Whole body isometric contraction which blocks blood flow through muscles. Heart has a harder time pushing blood out, and no venous return (cycle)
