The rib cage is the ribs and the breast plate knows as the sternum (circular structure protecting organs) Not all ribs directly attach to the sternum (branching of cartilage from ribs to the breast plate) Glossy cartilage because made of hyalin cartilage: runs from the rib to the sternum. Use this costal (rib) cartilage and this determines id we have true ribs, false ribs, are floating ribs. The sternum is made up of 3 pieces: xiphoid process at the bottom. True ribs directly attach to the sternum by costal/hyalin cartilage. False ribs indirectly attach to the sternum (ribs 8-10) costal cartilage moves up to ribs 7 so it"s indirect. Ribs 11-12 are floating ribs because there"s no costal cartilage attached. Body (central large piece), xiphoid process (small bony piece at bottom making tip) and manubrium. Have names for points useful for physicians. Can feel the jugular notch just below lower half of the neck.
