Kinesiology 2222A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Sagittal Suture, Coronal Suture, Frontal Suture
Document Summary
Solid pieces of bone are made up of many pillars: these pillars are actually called osteon, they provide a lot of structural support, femur main bone in the thigh, needs to support the entire body. Many layers in the osteon, these layers are called lamellae (circular layers) The lamellae are just layers of bone material, the fibers are what create the strength of the bone. Reasons is that cracks will not propagate all the way through bone: e. g. in a brick wall, the crack goes down. But in bones there is not an easy path of least resistance. Therefore cracks get resistance from one lamellae to the next. Hollow bones are for lightness, but the structure and organization of the osteons maximize strength. In the centre of the osteon, there is a central canal where the blood can move. The general morphology (features) of the bone: long bones. Found in the upper part of limbs: short bones.
