The precaution adoption process model parallels the transtheoretical model of change. Assumptions three and four signify where the ttm splits from the papm. This isn"t to say that being optimistic is bad. It"s just saying that we must ground our optimism in some type of objective reality. Can either progress from stage three to stage four, but ideally you progress from stage three to stage five. This emphasizes that it is a non-linear progression. Stage one and stage two of the papm correspond to stage 1 of the ttm. Papm focuses more on the act of coming to a decision than the ttm does. It overlaps with the pc and preparation stage of the ttm. At the beginning of this papm stage, it is more pc and towards the end of this papm it is more preparation. Ttm has no parallel to this stage. In ttm, if someone decides not to act, they drop back to pc.
