Lecture 11 balancing individual/communal rights (guest lecture) Individual and collective rights: related to health and healthcare. Definition of health: according to the world health organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is about us and how we are living. A lot of experiment about health: hunter-gatherer society. Short life span-mainly because not having enough food: not because of disease. Everything about disease was to sustain and to survive. Idea about health is communal everyone has to survive: agricultural revolution. Food can be stored: no longer a problem. Mythology, superstition, religion: because people were still dying. Disease theory: those societies with complement health health about the whole group. It was around 15-16th century when disease theory came into practice. Individual health: not about the whole community anymore, but more about individuals, bubonic plague (1347-1700)
