Lecture 6 reproductive ethics: the concept of personhood & its relationship with abortion. Why is a definition of personhood so important: for abortion: the status of the fetus is critical. Most of the arguments for abortion recognize this question. "normal" adult human beings (capable, autonomous: more controversial: Is the biology category from which personhood is derived. Is a legal status, not a biological one: a person is not a thing. If you"re a person, you are treated like a person: a person has rights and responsibilities, endowed with dignity, deserving respect. Historical overview: aristotle thought that there were four varieties of soul and that only humans had all four, but lesser creatures (intelligent mammals) had three, but plants had only one. Soul = the internal value and the non-materialistic things that makes you different (e. g. religion, ancient greece, and etc. ) There is another element to us; it is the key variable to us and everything else.
