Ethics week 8 notes reproductive ethics: today looks at the concept of personhood and its relationship with abortion, what do we mean when we say you"re a person, beginning of life vs. end. Why is a definition of personhood so important: for abortion the status of the fetus is critical. With rights and the ability to experience/feel: for end-of-life scenarios when, if ever, does one lose personhood, for our treatment of other creatures are higher order mammals people , vegetarianism/veganism, use of animals in experiments. Uncontroversial: normal adult human beings (capable, autonomous) Is the biological category from which personhood is derived: not all humans are people, but all people are human, not enjoying all privileges/rights of a person, e. g. children, severely mentally disabled. John locke (1632-1704) suggested that a person was a being capable of following laws, and feel both happiness and misery: humans have emotions, we develop with experiences.
