Document Summary
The serous membrane lines the cavities and it reduces some friction with a liquid that it produces (because organs are always moving). Friction normally leads to inflammation, so the fluid acts as a lubricant. The largest serous membrane is the peritoneum which we can separate into the visceral and parietal layer. Parietal means wall, so the walls of the abdominal cavity. The peritoneal cavity is an area where there is potential to be filled up. It provides a route for blood vessels, lymphatic, and nerves. Dorsal mesentery is coming off the posterior of the abdominal cavity. There is the aorta at the back of the abdominal cavity. There is ventral mesentery is at the top of the abdominal cavity. These are not in the abdominal cavity, they adhere to the posterior wall. There is potential space to contain (food), this is why we feel bloated after a big meal. The omentum doesn"t have vessels to feed the organs.
