Lecture 1 introduction: theories of sexuality: the study of the history of sexuality start in the 1960s and early 1970s. In this time there were many emerging social movements that the sexuality fit into - such as the civil rights movement. Wrote a book called the history of sexuality" and was published in the 1970s with multiple volumes. This was the first time that sex is talked about as having a history. His book really focused in the victorian era; history of the 19th country. Failings: did not talk about sex and sexuality as having a history before the 19th century but we can go back to early christian times and talk about sex. In the 19th century, there was prescriptive literature ( how to behave and prescribing a specific behavior: telling people how to behave. The fact that they gave the knowledge, reflected the power they had and it helped to promote and perpetuate that power.
