Rise of labour organizaion: there are compeing interpretaions of the origins of labour unions. Others emphasize the drive to unite all workers as a class to improve the rights of all workers within the capitalist system. Decline of masculine self worth; deskilling; rise of scieniic management. Three stages of union organization: crat/skilled unions: Organized according to crat, and later according to skill. Early organizaions began as support groups for workers who shared crat; the leaders of such groups soon became spokesmen for the workers when dealing with employers. Early unions are formed by skilled workers worried about the rise of unskilled labour. Fosters worker solidarity and greater class consciousness among workers, especially as unions expand beyond crat to be organized according to skill: industrial/unskilled unions. Focus on the nobility of labour; the dignity of the working man. Strives to create a working class culture. Hopes to raise public consciousness about workers: radical unions.
