The term western , associated with progress and imperialism, started to be used in the latter half of the 19c. Began to be associated with racism - countries were separated into progressive and backwards. Civil war - basically how the franco-prussian war ended. Citizens of paris did not want to accept the third republic and wanted to keep fighting, led to civil war. A french general who became a figurehead for an authoritarian movement and led the people of france to reject the third republic and want an authoritarian government under a monarch or military figure. An upswing in popular support could have led him to take power but he missed the crucial moment - caused him to lose support and the boulanger affair to collapse. Alfred dreyfus was a jewish officer in the french army accused of trading secrets to the german army - false accusation, but the military made false charges and began to fabricate evidence.
