Continent size tectonic plates, japan lies on the point where pacific plate rams into eurasian plate that is constantly moving. Japan is on the eurasian plate that is going over the pacific plate and there is immense stress that reaches a threshold and then snaps. Pacific plate moves under and towards the eurasian plate and the built-up stress and momentum cause the huge earthquake. Earthquake was supposed to last only a few seconds, but it kept going. The larger earthquake starts going and doesn"t stop and gets bigger. Low lying flat farm land, there is nothing to stop or slow the water since its flat land.
