Japan lies at the point where the pacific plate collides with eurasian plate. Japan is at the eurasian plate pacific plate drives underneath it. Stress builds up until plates snap and earthquake occurs. Eurasian plate is dragged downward by pacific plate that is under it. The upward motion thrusts a 4 mile deep water mass upwards. When the dome collapses back immense waves come up into the ocean. The waves travel at a blistering speed and a tsunami is born 500 mph. One side of wave goes to pacific and the other goes to the coast of japan. Wave takes minutes to reach the coast. First hits the north, then in the south, then strikes in the north again. The height and intensity of the wave varies in different towns.
