Document Summary
Earth sciences 1022a lecture 6 sedimentary rocks. Introduction: how sediment gets deposited by various agents and turns into sedimentary rocks, they are important because they form 75% of rocks that we see on continents, sedimentary: derived from latin sediment (meaning to settle) These particles rain down from a water column, and settle as mud. Over millions of years, it turns into solid rock called shale. Forms a cap rock: a rock that seals the oily gas in there. The clay particles within shale are very close together and its difficult for fluids to get around those particles (they seal oil and gas under a rock formation that has shale in it) It is also used to make pottery, bricks, and tiles: sandstone: well sorted if grains of similar size, poorly sorted if a mix of sizes. Mainly quartz grains, called arkose if it has lots of feldspar.
