Disability Studies 2202A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Labeling Theory, Industrial Revolution, Eugenics
Document Summary
Lecture 1 - disability labels with a historical context. This occurs when you go off to the side of the majority or do not do what most. When you don"t do what you"re supposed to do, you are labelled. Medical labels use these categories as well. Some powerful people that label are teachers. People will often see the label even if the person doesn"t exhibit signs that go along with that label. People did these things because they thought that it was the right thing to do. Without medical intervention, many people with disabilities would naturally die. Judeo-christians and muslims also resorted to beating the disability out of them - not to be evil, but because they thought it worked. Blindness was seen as a punishment - the parents contribute to their children having a disability. We make distinctions between acquired and congenital disability. We often feel more sorry for people who acquire their disabilities.
