Classical Studies 2500A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Greek Hero Cult, Sharpening Stone, Karfi
Document Summary
Renaissance is a rebirth of culture and lots of diff things. 1200 bc is the official end of bronze age. Collapse of mycenaean palaces ushers into the iron age; dark age b/c of lack of archaeological evidence (not entire lack); we lose a lot of the things that gave us archaeological evidence before. We lose monumental architecture, lose literacy (no documents written down like no clay tablets), less specialization and production of luxury crafts. Not very much to look at in dark age. In terms of other trends, there are changes in burial practices which suggest social organization is changing. Iron age: widespread use of iron (bronze continues to be used, but at this point we start to see the widespread use of iron) Movement of pops: major pop decrease b/c of dark age issues like palatial collapses, and migration. Complete organization of social structure because there is a smaller population now.
