Document Summary
Emergence of polis in the archaic period. Emergence of sanctuaries (short discussion: samos, olympia. 1200/1100-800/750 bce: also called the dark age. Mycenaean palace states did not disappear all at once in 1200 bce: some stayed inhabited until 1100 bce. Over the course of 100 years, this civilization ended. This is considered to be fairly quickly: gradual shift in settlement patterns. Not one single event: combination of reasons interrelated. Systems collapse: extreme specialization, palace administration breaks down and the entire region around it also collapses. One big thing may go wrong or a couple of little things may go wrong. Collapse of mycenaean palaces usher in early iron age: called the dark age because of the lack of archaeological evidence for the period in comparison to those before and after. Characterized by a loss of many of the conventions attached to the palatial administration: lack of monumental stone architecture, loss of literacy.
