We haven"t really made that much progress in the war on cancer that nixon declared in 1971. Men are at a higher risk of cancer than women (45% chance of getting it, little over 25% chance of dying from it) For women it is 40% chance of getting it, 25% chance of dying. Top 4 prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer. Important factors include external factors, cells that divide a lot. Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in canada. Rapid cell division is a fundamental hallmark of embryonic development, we need genes to do this and need genes to shut them off for normal development. Keep replication genes turned on so they can divide forever and not die. Cells that do not respect checkpoints are dividing out of control. Cdk phosphorylates target proteins in order to control their expression (post- translation control of proteins) to either turn them on or off to break g1 checkpoint.
