Document Summary

Milkmaids were generally immune to smallpox if they previously had cowpox: similar disease- less severe. Edward jenner (1796)- decided to see if a deliberate infection with cowpox would protect humans. Inoculated an 8 year old boy with cowpox. Smallpox has now been eradicated from the human population. Technique of infecting with a similar but less severe form of pathogen: evolved to modern vaccinations. Al take advantage of the immune system. 1st line- physical barriers that prevent the entry of pathogens. 2nd line- innate immune system- inherited mechanisms that protect the body from pathogens in a non-specific way. 3rd line- adaptive immune system found only in vertebrates, which involves inherited mechanisms that lead to the synthesis of molecules such as antibodies that target pathogens in a specific way. Prevents pathogens from entering the body: physical- body surface forms a barrier of tight junctions between epithelial cells that keeps most parasites and pathogens from entering.
