Transposable elements = jumping genes: transposable element: dna segments several hundred to several thousand base pairs long that move (or transpose or jump) from place to place in the genome. If a te jumps into a gene, it can disrupt the gene"s function and cause mutation. Corn coloring was gained or lost depending on where the transposon was. Almost lost her job because it was controversial to think that dna jumped around. Dna structure was thought to be stable and untouched so this was going against the existing dogma. First evidence by marcus roades in 1930s but was described in detail by barbara. The elements themselves are different in different species but the idea of moving genes exist in all. Some with cool names: mariner, gypsy, looper, springer, hopper, stalker, invader, diver, frogger. Can be 50 bp to 10 kb in length. However, there are examples where they have functions in the host.
