Has to be some sort of ligand. Lots of times there are receptors that are turned on accidentally without ligand which causes cell to replicate uncontrollable cancer. All senses we have are involved with g protein couple receptors. Almost all gcprs in body are related to smell allow us to smell. 3 components which is associated with coupled receptor (gamma and beta hang together, and alpha) You have low concentration of ligand will trigger effector subunit which triggers effector. Amp and cyclic gmp secondary messengers. At the end turns on a secondary messenger signals something else. 7 transmembrane receptor almost every gcpr. Receptors embedded in membrane look like snake. Only alpha subunit binds gtp or gdp. G alpha i inhibits effector (shutting down production of cyclic amp)
