Anatomy and Cell Biology 3319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 48: Urogenital Diaphragm, Pelvic Floor, Fallopian Tube
Document Summary
Anatomy of the internal reproductive organs, their role in ovulation & implantation, and their supporting structures. Objectives: describe the structure, general function and location of the uterus, fallopian tubes & ovaries, trace the course of an ovum from ovulation to implantation + xplain the role of hormones during this process. Gonads (ovaries: produces gametes (ova, secrete sex hormones. Facilitate fertilization / parturition: external genitalia, vagina, uterine tubes, uterus, mammary glands. Cervix = anterior to fingertips, not distal. Blades placed in the anterior & posterior fornices. The cervix swings into view as the speculum opens. Lh and fsh surge induces ovulation after rising estrogen levels. Progesterone rises from remaining corpus luteum: this stimulates growth of functional layer of endometrium. If no fertilization progesterone drops , inducing sheading of the functional endometrium (menstruation) Implantation of embryo: causes release of human chorionic gonadotropin (hcg) supports the corpus luteum (keeps progesterone levels from falling) until the placenta dvlps (placenta then produces progesterone)
