Oldest known humerus bone evolved during water-to-land transition. In addition to primates, many rodents have excellent upper limb digital control. Upper limb power movements vs. fine movements: ex. hitting baseball vs. playing piano. Consider effects of gravity of upper vs. lower limb structure and function in upright humans vs. 4-legged animals. Bones connected to each other w ligaments. Muscles connected to the bones w tendons. Our bodies move when: muscles contract and exert force on the bones to initiate an action. During movements 1 end of muscle = stationary, other end = moves the body part. The origin of a muscle the end that doesn"t move when contraction occurs. The insertion the opposite end of the muscle that moves the bones (i. e. the movable piece) Insertion is usually the distal end of the muscle further away from the center of body. General features of the limbs ul = upper limb, ll = lower limb.
