Document Summary

Peripheral nerves connect spinal cord/brain and effector organs (muscles, glands) Mixed nerve: has afferent and efferent fibers. Nerves can contain both myelinated and non-myelinated axons. Both presynaptic terminals and sensory receptors are both neurons in most cases: they are apart of the sensory nervous system. Sensory receptor: afferent structure that sends information towards cns. Skeletal muscle/motor synapse/nmj: efferent structures: neuromuscular junction: synapses between nerve and muscle. Cell bodies: sensory neurons are located in dorsal root ganglions, preganglion motor neurons located in the cns, postganglionic motor neurons in the vertebral and paravertebral ganglions or close to effector organs. Nerves are the ways that the axons project from the motor neurons that lie on the ventral horn of the spinal cord and the sensory branches where the sensory branches come in. Motor and sensory part join onto a mixed nerve. Nerves are the solid and dotted lines in the photo.
