Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Brainstem, Autonomic Nervous System, Ependyma
Document Summary
Spinal cord is part of the cns while the nerves are the pns. It can be divided into different sections: cervical section: most upper section, thoracic section, lumbar section, sacral section. Spinal cord column is divided according to how the vertebral column is divided: spinal cord ends at the beginning of the lumbar segment. Downwards from the lumbar area, the spinal cord is the cauda equina. Spinal cord as a solid column only runs in the two upper sections (cervical and thoracic) of the vertebrae column: after that it is a bundle of nerves and not a solid column anymore = cauda equine. Segmentation of the spinal cord is according to where the nerves leave the vertebrae column in order to go to different parts of the body. Ventral roots: efferent nerve fibers: large motor neurons are located in the ventral horn. Spinal cord is embedded in bony structures and is protected by the vertebrae.
