September 20th: first class note: lecture one nature of theory. Result: the assembly: ekkelisa, they ran democratic athens with 40,00 thousand people. Boule: they created a smaller council of 500 and the council of 50. 9 archons: they wanted to make sure the corruption was at a minium. They had generals who were elected by the assembly: 10 elected strategoi. Ostracism: exclusion from society, left out people. If you owned land and didn"t have debt then the government decisions affected you more: philosophy, pre socratic (mid 5th century bce, sophists (same period) phlipshers didn"t like soph at school. Not interested in speculative questions they are interested in particular matters of persuasion. Rhetoric: the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. Everything is relative all standards were the same, everything goes: the persian war (490-479 bce)
