What is law: set of rules that are enforced by the state that seek to govern behaviour. Source of law: we used to think law came from god / the emperor / whoever was in charge, will of the sovereign. Figure out what all the law is around a particular thing: there is no one book, there are a lot of cases. Federal gets to define what is marriage / divorce provincial gets to decide how property is divided, child custody, etc. Euthanasia, elections, gambling, divorce law, privacy laws, obscenity, first. Waste disposal, privacy laws: examples municipal jurisdiction, zoning, noise control, licensing. Types of law: how do we regulate things that are no longer criminalized, steps of thinking. International law: public law, human rights law, to get international tribunal, you have to have exhausted national law"s top court not necessarily binding, no enforcement mechanism, united nation human rights court, european union court.
