Document Summary
Type (strength of encoding) affects later retrieval ability. Generation effect: people remember information they generate. Hypothesis themselves better than information they are given. Generating information creates links to other information: without linking to other information- you wouldn"t be able to generate the target word the clues given to generate the word links. Images generated extra beneficial: using 2 different codes. Reading the word (mainly auditory) & visual. More bizarre the links the better: information darwinism- all of the information in ltm competing w/ each other for remembrance, similar information interference, bizarre, unique release from interference. Maintenance rehearsal: simply keeps the information in stm. Elaborative rehearsal: manipulates information, finding meaning & connections, encodes into ltm. How we manipulate information in the stm and working memory influences level of encoding. Deep processing: association of meaning, deep grasp of information. Shallow processing: no deep understanding of information. Give participants words, ask participants whether the word makes the statement they read correct, or false.
