Document Summary
This experiment was to test whether using visual imagery ( images in the head ) can create connections that enhance memory using a procedure called paired-associate learning in which a list of word pairs is presented. They presented a list of 15 pairs of nouns (ex. boat-tree). One group was asked to silently repeat the pairs as they were presented and another group was told to form a mental picture in which the two items were interacting. One example of how you can improve memory when encoding is through the self-reference effect (when you relate a word to yourself). Another example of how you can improve memory when encoding is through the generation effect (creating the material yourself rather than passively receiving it). E: have subjects in two different groups study a list of word pairs in two different ways.
