Importance of expectations: bottom-up: taking sensory information and bringing it to our brain, top-down: built in processes, things can become easy for us to miss when they violate the expectations that we have. If we fail to pay attention to something the chances of it being remembered are low: attention is the necessary first step to memory. Visual search task: searching for a particular target, parallel processing: searching for one feature, target will grab your attention, because it is distinguishing itself from other targets based on a feature (ex. Colour: doesn"t matter how many distracters there are, serial processing: searching for 2 or more features, we have to focus our attention on all of the distracters, the target does not just pop out at you, slower process. Increasing the number of distracters makes the task take longer. Memory: bandura"s social learning theory, first step is attention, second step is retention.
