Lecture 1 the respiratory system and breathing. The intracellular reaction of oxygen with organic molecules to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of atp. This is really how cells use oxygen to produce energy. The by-product of this reaction is carbon dioxide, which needs to be eliminated by the respiratory system: external respiration. Alveoli are the sites of gas exchange. Diffusion of oxygen to the bloodstream occurs: blood will move oxygen to the heart so that it can be distributed to the rest of the body, oxygen reaches tissues and diffuses. Reacts with different molecules to produce energy at the tissue level: carbon dioxide is produced by this reaction.
