Document Summary

None posted officially: relevant section (6th edition): Following are not assigned, they are my suggestions. Transmitter agent diffuses and binds to receptor protein on post-syn memrbane. Receptor determines effect - not the transmitter, it is just a signal. Recall gpcr and hormones having effects in different areas. Ligand binding opens an ion channel, hence the name. Binding of transmitter results in change in mem potential. Known as the post-synaptic potential (psp), duration of which is 20-40ms with presence of the transmitters. Ion channel may be specific for cations (na or k) Channel opens in presence, opening a cation channel. Allows net influx of cations, depolarizing: epsp, causing response. Nicotinic = because it binds nicotine, identical effects. All of the above can also act on metabotropic receptors - different effects attained. Binding of ligands here activates enzyme that is usually g-protein coupled. Enzyme facilitation will result in increased production or destruction of 2nd msgrs camp, cgmp, etc etc.
