The moral of the story: proverbs and mottos. After the conquest of the area, this story would have been translated to arabic. Early 800s ad: first object still surviving, one paper manuscript in arabic, 15 lines. 900s ad: bookseller in baghdad, contained a persian version in his catalogue that was translated to arabic. This catalogue is our only source telling us what books were available at the time. Sasanian frame tales: other similar frame stories from the sasanian empire with a similar structure debates and tales linked with proverbs. The text we are reading is a modern translation of a manuscript from the 1300s it contains the parts of the first versions we have from the sasanian empire, and more from later arabic.
