Document Summary

Piacere and similar verbs mancare (to miss) restare (to remain) Like piacere, these verbs are conjugated with essere in the passato prossimo. : same construction as in piacere . Subject in english > indirect object in italian. Direct object in english > subject in italian. We miss our dog ( we, the subject, becomes an indirect object; our cat, the direct object, becomes the subject) [also: a noi manca il nostro gatto]: construction depending on whether there is a direct object. Restare/ rimanere (= to remain, to be left) Construction unlike piacere because there is just a subject accompanying the verb. Three apples are left (have remained) = sono rimaste tre mele / sono restate tre mele. [there is no other entity referred to apples , so apples stays as the subject in italian: same construction as in piacere .
