Despite the important role sound plays within any film"s formal system, it is extremely difficult to analyse (sound cannot be frozen" in time, as the image can; oftentimes, individual elements of sound cannot be distinguished one from another. To adapt to sound like you adapt to pictures and images. Can function as a cue, directing viewer attention. Functional exchange -> image works with sound and how they work together. Acoustics properties: loudness (volume and perceived distance, pitch (high or low of sound, timbre (tonal quality) Citizen kane echoing vastness of space: high heels echo confidence. Sound: possesses the ability of rhythm and fidelity. Body movement can be matched to the rhythm of sound. Interact with other rhythms: space and time. Any sound that dervives from the diegesis, and then the sound is diegetic. Voice-over narration if the voice is from the character but from a different time (ex. From childhood, etc) then the voice is diegetic.
